SESSION 5 - The Design and Testing of a Next Generation Regional CESTOL Airliner

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is currently working on a NRA, collaborating with Georgia Tech Research Institute to develop and validate predictive capabilities for the design and performance of a next gen (N+2), regional, subsonic, CESTOL aircraft with 25% reduction in fuel consumption and progress towards -52 dB lower noise levels than current aircraft. A 10 ft span model with circulation control wings, blended wing body, and over the wing engine locations was designed and manufactured. The Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics (AMELIA) is outfitted with dual radius flaps, cross correlation rake, and nickel plated surfaces for FISF testing. The testing will be conducted at the NFAC at NASA Ames during summer of 2011. The NFAC was chosen for its ability to mount the model on a sting allowing for cleaner aerodynamic measurements, an existing high and low pressure air supply necessary to run the TPS and CCW, and the 40x80 ft test section which ensures no downwash impinges on the tunnel floor. The NFAC is also acoustically treated allowing aerodynamic and acoustic measurements to be performed simultaneously. The results of this test will be compiled into a database tailored to CFD analysis of the complex flows associated with CCW, a blended wing body, and over the wing engine locations. The database will be comprised of pressure, skin friction, aeroacoustic, and boundary layer interaction measurements.

Eric Paciano is an Aerospace Engineering Masters student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. For the past year he has worked on the Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics under a NASA Research Announcement, where he has focused on 3-D modeling, instrumentation layout, and experimental preparation for the June 2011 test. Academic interests include wind tunnel testing, low speed aerodynamics, and 3-D modeling. |
