SESSION 4 - Meeting the Challenges of Multiple Clients at Windshear

"The Windshear Inc. facility is a commercially available rolling road wind tunnel, sized for full scale automobile testing. An overview of the technical features and capabilities of this wind tunnel has been widely presented, including at this forum in 2008. This presentation will address the engineering based approach that was implemented by Jacobs Technology, to launch the facility and enable the commercial multi-client testing. Now in it's third year of operation, Windshear Inc. has played host to testing a wide variety of products, including vehicles from NASCAR Cup, Nationwide, and Truck, Indy Car, Formula One, ALMS and Grand Am prototypes and GT cars, and others. This wide customer base has presented some rather unique technical and operational challenges, which will be discussed in some detail. One of the most difficult technical challenges has been to provide an accurate and repeatable aerodynamic side force measurement for full, road-ready vehicles resting on the single-belt rolling road. This particular challenge has been resolved, in a very unique way, with a custom wheel force transducer system developed by Jacobs".

 sp Jeffrey Bordner

Jeffrey Bordner, Site Manager at Windshear, Inc.

Mr. Bordner is Jacobs’ Site Manager for the Windshear operation in Concord, North Carolina. He led Jacobs’ effort to build the staff, processes, and systems required to initiate successful client testing and now serves as the on-site manager for all activities at the high-tech, rolling road wind tunnel tailored to full-scale motorsport and automotive testing. Capitalizing on his extensive experience and Jacobs’ wind tunnel design-build-operate expertise spanning aerospace, automotive and motorsport applications, facility launch was accomplished on a fast-track schedule that allowed client testing to begin in 2008. Despite some of the worst economic times on record, Windshear is now thriving with strong demand for its premium test services.

Prior to joining Jacobs, Mr. Bordner spent nearly two decades with Chrysler Corporation working in product development aerodynamics, specializing in motorsport and high performance vehicles such as the Dodge Viper. He assembled and led the aerodynamic team that took Dodge back to NASCAR Sprint Cup racing and that designed the body of the Dodge Charger Funny Car which continues to hold the NHRA top speed record. He also managed a number of world-class aerodynamic and climatic wind tunnel facilities at Chrysler’s Technology Center in Auburn Hills, MI. Mr. Bordner holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the Western Michigan University.
