Datatel supplies rotating telemetry for test instrumentation in a very wide range of applications covering aero engines (including flight testing), aero component rigs, helicopter rotors and transmissions and propellers Current applications of particular note are those in counter-rotating, open-rotor propulsion models for wind tunnel testing. These have very demanding requirements both in installation space constraints and in performance, involving high bandwidth dynamic pressure and strain measurement, signal phasing accuracy between rotors and true simultaneous data transmission.
A new generation of digital telemetry is now available which offers significant advances in channel count and the ability to provide a mixture of sensor types in the same compact transmitter. Transmitters can be selected for assembly into systems with 600+ channels of simultaneous data transmission from a combination of dynamic and static strain gages, thermocouples, RTD’s and pressure transducers.
Signal bandwidths up to 96kHz can be provided for dynamic data, although 20-50kHz is typical for most measurements. Note that this refers to true signal bandwidth, or frequency response, not ‘sampling rate’.
With compact multi-channel transmitters and their arrays of closely spaced connections, and systems with several hundred channels, sensor lead wire hookup becomes a major issue. Datatel has developed a technique for dealing with this. The approach uses printed circuit boards as connectors with pins or tabs on one side to which wires from sensors, RF antennae and power supply are attached. On the other side of the board are pins which plug directly into sockets in the transmitters. Such boards are comparatively easy and cheap to design and manufacture and can be configured to suit each individual application and can be aligned to match preferred wire routing and clipping. The tracks on the boards provide all necessary interconnections for sensors, power supply and RF output antennae.
All telemetry transmitters require low-voltage DC power; this can be supplied by batteries but in the aerospace context inductive power supply is almost always used. This requires stationary and rotating coils, usually arranged as concentric windings acting as a rotary transformer.
A major feature of the new systems is the provision of diagnostic functions to permit continuous monitoring of parameters such as excitation current on/off, selection of excitation current level, dynamic strain gage shunt calibration, detection of open or shorted sensors, resetting of sensor measuring range and gain, transmitter onboard temperature, etc. All these functions are controlled remotely at the system receivers via Ethernet connection using a graphical user interface. Datatel digital systems offer either traditional analog data outputs or a high-speed digital interface for direct readout to external data acquisition.
In addition to supplying the basic electronic elements for a telemetry system Datatel has the experience and expertise which gives them the capability to provide a fully engineered, turnkey installation with all necessary rotating and stationary hardware, power coils and antennae, hookup interconnections, etc. Each system is integrated at the Datatel facility and fully calibrated and tested before delivery. Assistance with commissioning can be provided and service support from the factory is always available.
